Master Distiller, Bombay Sapphire

Anne Brock

Can you tell us a bit about yourself and your current role?

I’m the Master Distiller for Bombay Sapphire, leading the team responsible for crafting our gin for the entire world. Our distillery, based in beautiful Hampshire, is where we meticulously oversee every batch to ensure the highest quality. We’re proud to welcome visitors year-round, giving them a behind-the-scenes look at the care, precision, and passion that go into every bottle of Bombay Sapphire.

What inspired you to enter the distilling industry?

I’ve always had a passion for science and studied chemistry at university, but my journey into distilling started even earlier—behind the bar. Working as a bartender before university gave me a deep appreciation for great drinks, and becoming a distiller was the perfect way to bring my two passions together: science and the art of creating exceptional spirits.

Have you had any female role models or mentors who have influenced your journey?

Absolutely—many! The drinks industry is full of inspiring women, from distillers to brand owners to bartenders, and I’ve been fortunate to learn from and work alongside some incredible role models. However, my first real inspiration was my chemistry teacher, Mrs. Wynn-Evans. She not only nurtured my love of chemistry but also gave me the confidence to believe in myself. I will always be grateful for the impact she had on my journey.

Have you faced any challenges as a woman in the industry, and how have you navigated them?

One of the great things about the drinks industry is its inclusivity, but like any field, there’s always room for improvement. While I’ve been fortunate in many ways, I know that not everyone has the same opportunities. That’s why I’m committed to supporting and lifting others who may face greater challenges, ensuring that the industry continues to become more diverse, welcoming, and equitable for everyone.

Have you seen any positive changes in gender diversity in the industry during your career?

Absolutely! The rise of craft distilling has brought much greater visibility to careers in the drinks industry, and as a result, we’re seeing more women entering the field—which is fantastic. There’s still work to be done, but progress is happening, and it’s clear that diversity makes the industry stronger, more innovative, and more dynamic. The more perspectives we bring to the table, the better the industry becomes for everyone.

What advice would you give to other women considering a career in the drinks industry?

Go for it! Believe in your abilities and don’t be afraid to take up space in the industry. The drinks world thrives on diverse perspectives, and there are more opportunities than ever for women to succeed. Seek out mentors, build a strong network, and know that there’s a growing community ready to support you. Your voice, ideas, and skills are valuable—so step forward with confidence and make your mark!
