Can you tell us a little about your current role and the focus of your work today?
My current role is as a supplier to the brewing and beverage industry. I help my customers improve hygiene standards, optimise and improve cleaning processes.
Looking back, what path led you into the drinks industry, and what were some defining moments along the way?
I started my degree at Heriot- Watt University studying microbiology and changed to Brewing and Microbiology after realising how many more interesting and fun opportunities were going to be available to me. Although I was the only female undergraduate studying brewing at that time I felt very supported but was told I had to be strong as it was a male dominated industry.
During most of my career, I have continued to be very much in the minority as a female which has it’s advantages and disadvantages.
From your experience, how have opportunities for women in the industry evolved during your career - and what still needs attention?
I am pleased to say that more and more women are coming into the industry and we are now no longer treated differently.
What advice would you offer to women entering the industry today?
Put yourself out there and take every opportunity you get.
Is there anything you’d like to share with other women considering a career in the drinks industry? Or any final thoughts you’d like to share?
Get involved in your local CIBD section meetings and visits. There are so many people with a passion for the industry willing to share their experience and expertise and don’t pass up the opportunity to visit breweries and distilleries, no two are the same.
