By: Shane McNamara
01/01/2017
Brewing consistently high quality beers is no easy task. Now try and complete that task in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean on an island where the closest large land mass is Greenland. For over 100 years this has been the task of Ölgerdin Egill Skallagrímsson (Ölgerdin). Recently, the company began exporting its wide range of beers to Europe and North America.

By: Shane McNamara

In the 70s it was The Clash beginning to make their mark on the world music scene. Now, almost forty years later, it is the 70s of a different kind that are making their mark. With London now home to more than 70 independent breweries (and counting), it is clear where the nation’s brewing capital lies. One particular hot-bed area for breweries is Hackney in East London. Apples from heaven ... Willie Smith’s celebrates heritage and innovation
By: Shane McNamara
01/03/2018
The journey to Willie Smith’s took me down the windy A6 highway just 35 minutes south of Hobart to the small town of Huonville in the Huon Valley, Tasmania. The first thing you notice here is the fresh air (an appreciable difference to London), in fact, this is one of the most untouched places on earth and the air in Tasmania is officially recognised as some of the cleanest air in the world. The prevailing winds travel over one of the largest expanses of virgin forest wilderness in Australia before reaching the valley. With an annual average rainfall of 700mm, additional water is available from the Mountain River that flows through the Sleeping Beauty mountain range. Suffice to say – this is a little slice of heaven on earth – and the perfect place to start a cider business.

Golfing tragedy - Coopers goes under par for a new world class facility
By: Shane McNamara
01/12/2018
Not many breweries around the world have a threehole par-3 course on its grounds but Coopers Brewery does…. or did. Yes, until last year the South Australian family-owned and operated brewery boasted a little slice of heaven in the shadows of the brewery, only to unceremoniously shorten it to two holes. For what I hear you ask? Well, something more relevant and meaningful to the operation I suppose one could argue – a world class malting facility.

April 21-23 saw the Young Scientists Symposium (YSS) at the Sierra Nevada Brewery in Chico, California. In the words of Professor Charlie Bamforth “…the delegates would not only have the opportunity of outstanding amenities for a meeting but would also be able to “drink-in” a location that is truly spectacular when it comes to doing things right.”
