It is a fair statement to make that Spain has been, for a very long time, a lager-drinking country. However, the past couple of years have seen a modest shift in the paradigm of the Spanish beer market. Spaniards love their food and they love their wine. However, that same affection is yet to be shown to beer. To even suggest that beer could be equal, if not better than wine, in terms of food pairings is near blasphemous to the ears of many.

Muntons inward mission - Brewers visit from across the pond

In 2007 Muntons Malt organised a North American craft brewers ‘inward mission’ to the United Kingdom. On that trip the company invited 20 American and Canadian craft brewers with the objective of taking them through UK barley breeding programmes, malting processes and British brewing practices. Wind forward eight years and June this year brought a return trip fi nanced by Muntons with support from the AHBD (formerly the HGCA) - with 24 breweries being represented; the spread in location and demographic of the brewers was far and wide with representatives from California, New York, Missouri, Utah and Louisiana among them.

The 12th International Trends in Brewing Symposium, Ghent 2016 Once again the team at KU Leuven hosted a warm and well organised ‘Trends’. The symposium focused on ‘Celebrating diversity of beers and beer styles’ with topics covered including beer styles (What? Why? and How?), sources of fermentable extract, flavour diversity, microbial diversity, and final product evaluation.

A new world, a new way: Shene Estate and modern distilling in historic Australia

In the small town of Pontville, Tasmania, lies one of Australia’s oldest buildings, now home to one of its newest distilleries. The picturesque drive to the Shene Estate, located just 25 minutes north-west of Hobart city centre, follows the River Derwent and takes you past the world famous Museum of Old and New Art (MONA) and on to the open landscape of Pontville. The distillery is housed in lovingly restored buildings on a 200-year old estate.
